This folky watercolor shows Robin Hoods Retreat, a tavern owned by John Harris, with a horse and carriage in the foreground. The watercolor is indistinctly signed in the lower left corner and dated 1885. The sign above the tavern door reads as follows, “John Harris licensed to retail ale, beer, and porter to be consumed on the premises”. Robin Hood’s Retreat is listed in the 1890 Business Directory for Gloucester Road, Bristol, England. The watercolor is in good condition with some light foxing. W: 10’, H: 12.75”
